Nothing kills confidence faster than catching your own reflection mid-squat and realizing your leggings have gone sheer. It is the single most common complaint in activewear reviews, and it is almost always avoidable. Sheerness is not about price — it is about knit construction, fabric weight and fit. Here is how to evaluate any pair, including ours, before you commit.
Start with the squat test — in the fitting room, not the gym
The mirror test is the industry standard for a reason. Put the leggings on, stand in front of a mirror with strong light behind you, and drop into a deep squat. Bend forward too. If you can see skin tone or the seam lines through the fabric at any point, the knit is too open. Do this under bright light, not dim store lighting — sheer fabric hides in soft light and betrays you in a well-lit studio.
Every Shefit legging — from the Essential High-Waist 7/8 to the PulseKnit Seamless Ribbed — passes this test before it reaches the site. We test in bright studio conditions because that is where you train.
Fabric weight and knit density matter more than brand names
Look for these numbers
- GSM (grams per square meter): 220–280 GSM is the sweet spot for opaque performance leggings. Anything under 200 GSM usually needs a lining or shows sheen when stretched.
- Four-way stretch knits: nylon-spandex and polyester-spandex interlocks recover better than single-knit cotton blends, which thin out at stress points.
- Double-knit construction: fabrics like our PulseKnit interlock two yarn systems, so light cannot pass through a single layer of stretch.
Thin does not automatically mean sheer — some 190 GSM knits with tight construction hold up fine — but as a buyer, density is your safest signal. If a product listing does not state fabric weight, that itself is information.
Rise and waistband: the second failure point
Sheerness gets the headlines, but waistband failure ruins just as many pairs. A waistband that rolls during deadlifts or burpees means constant readjustment, and constant readjustment means the fabric at the seat is stretching unevenly — which is exactly where sheerness starts.
What to look for
- High rise with a wide band: a 3-inch or wider waistband distributes pressure instead of cutting in.
- Internal grip or bonded edges: these keep the band anchored through hip hinges and floor work.
- No drawstring needed: if a legging relies on a cinch cord to stay up, the cut is wrong. Our AeroFlex Motion Pocket Leggings hold position through full squats with nothing but cut and compression.
Seams, gussets and the crotch factor
A diamond or gusseted crotch panel is not a luxury detail — it removes the seam that runs straight through the highest-stress point of the garment. Flatlock seams reduce chafing and, just as important, they do not show through the outer fabric the way overlocked bulk seams do. Check the inner seams: if you can feel ridges through the outside of the fabric, everyone else can see them too.
The stretch-recovery check
Opacity is not just about the first wear. Cheap knits thin out permanently after a dozen wash cycles because the yarn loses elasticity. Here is a quick test you can do at home with any legging you own: stretch the fabric over your fist at the knee or seat. If it turns translucent when stretched and stays translucent after release, the knit has low recovery and will fail within months. Quality spandex blends snap back and stay opaque.
Sizing errors cause more sheerness than fabric does
The most common cause of see-through leggings is simply wearing a size too small. When fabric stretches beyond its engineered stretch percentage, the knit opens up — no fabric weight can save it. Our XS–XL range runs true to size, and the Studio Flared Leggings and every other style includes a measurement guide on the product page. If you are between sizes in a compression style, take the larger size; compression comes from the knit, not from squeezing.
Our shortlist before you buy any legging
- Do the squat test in bright light.
- Check fabric weight — 220 GSM or higher for training.
- Press a high-rise, wide waistband.
- Look for a gusseted crotch and flatlock seams.
- Stretch-test recovery over your fist.
- Buy your true size, not your aspirational one.
